Demolition and Groundwork Preparation
Our team at Newlay Brickwork was commissioned to transform an outdated bungalow into a stunning five-bedroom detached home. The project began with the careful demolition of the existing property, followed by the removal of 100 mm of topsoil. Once the site was cleared, we prepared the strip foundations to ensure a strong and stable base for the new build. This stage was crucial in setting the foundation for a high-quality, long-lasting home.
Building to Passive House Standards
Energy efficiency was at the heart of this project, as the property was designed to meet Passive House standards. This required exceptional levels of insulation both above and below ground level. To accommodate the unusually wide 200 mm cavity walls, we used specialist wall ties for strength and durability. In addition, thermal bridging was minimised by installing both inner and outer concrete lintels, which were rendered to create a seamless finish and maintain the home’s energy performance.
Traditional Materials for a Conservation Area
As the property was located within a conservation area, it was essential that the build blended with its surroundings. To achieve this, traditional materials such as clay roof tiles were specified and carefully installed, ensuring compliance with local regulations. This attention to detail allowed us to create a home that not only met modern building standards but also respected the character of the area.
A Successful 18-Month Project
